Access and Coating Group Training is now an OPITO Approved Training Provider. The approval(s) granted are for:
- Authorised Gas Tester Training (Standard Code: 9240)
- Basic H2S Training (Standard Code: 9014)
Course description:
Gas tests are performed to ensure that the environment in which we work is safe from the hazards of combustible or toxic gases, and that the worksite contains sufficient oxygen such that it is safe to breathe.
Gas testing involves testing for toxic and flammable gases using portable gas detection equipment, and is an integral part of establishing a safe system of work in the workplace.
This course is designed to ensure that personnel preparing for a gas tester role are equipped with the knowledge and skill to conduct gas tests for oxygen levels, flammable and toxic gases safely.
The course contains the following modules:
Module 1 - Authorised gas tester
Module 2 - Testing for flammable gas in preparation for hot work
Module 3 - Confined space testing
Module 4 - Gas monitoring
Course syllabus:
- Preparation for gas testing
- The hazards of operations within an oxygen deficient, toxic or flammable environment.
- Working within the permit to work system.
- Selection of suitable gas detector and pre-start checks.
- Calibrating the instruments used in atmospheric testing.
- The range and frequency of test.
- Determination of acceptable levels of flammable and toxic gases.
- Testing gas using testing equipment.
- Monitoring and retesting.
- Interpreting gas readings and documenting the results.
Prerequisities: No prerequisites are required to sit this course.
Methodology: PowerPoint presentation, Practical demonstrations, Film Show, Training Handout.
Duration: 2 Days
Assessment: At the end of each unit, there will be an assessment. Delegates will need to pass each module at 100%.
Certification: On successful completion of the course, each participant will be issued with a OPITO Accredited Authorized Gas Tester Certificate.
Validity: 3 Years
Course description:
H2S (hydrogen sulphide) is a gas that can be created by natural biological processes or by human activity and poses a serious threat to people or assets because of its extremely toxic and corrosive properties. It is important, therefore, for oil and gas personnel to be competent in emergency response practices necessary for them to stay and work in an environment with potential for exposure to H2S gas.
This training covers the characteristics of hydrogen sulphide gas and the potential physiological effects of exposure as well as the use of H2S detection equipment and escape breathing apparatus.
Course objective:
To ensure that the delegates gain the required knowledge and understanding of the hazards and properties of H2S; and appropriate emergency response actions to be taken should a H2S related incident arise.
Course syllabus:
- What is hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas
- Equipment and how it is used
- Operating personal H2S detection equipment (including checks)
- Responding to an alarm
- Donning and operating (including checks) an escape breathing apparatus (EBA) with a mask within 30 seconds
- Donning and operating (including checks) an EBA with a hood within 30 seconds
- Connecting to a pressurised cascade breathing system with an activated EBA which has been donned correctly
- Disconnecting from a pressurised cascade breathing system with an activated EBA which has been donned correctly.
